I’ve just read Epoch #3 of 5 by Kevin McCarthy as writer, Paolo Pantalena working the cover and pencils and Bill Farmer on colors. As much as I like a well written story, this book’s parts was greater than the entire whole.
Kevin McCarthy did a good job with writing duties, making the story simplistic enough to jump in, even in the middle of the story arc. I thought the characters were different but blended well together in this book. Bill Farmer’s colors were working nicely together, even the shadows seemed to be sentient looking at times. I also enjoy the character bios at the end, which tells the reader what types of monsters and creatures they can expect to see in the books.
As far a Paolo Pantalena goes, his clothing looks very natural on the characters. His facial features and body types, however, look almost identical to each other on every person. The faces seem stuck in “angry mode” and even when laughing or relaxed, their jaws look tightly clenched. I understand that the supernatural forces are on the loose there, but a little body distinction I think can go a long way, say between the vampires and the demons.
Overall, I’m not too picky about penciling if the story is well written, but this stood out too much for my tastes. If you like art like this, then happy hunting to you.
