What was your first project that made you feel like a real artist and how did you get it? :
The first comic book project that made me feel like a real artist was “Legend of Isis”. I saw an ad for it online and tried out and got the job. I had done a couple of penciling and coloring for independent comics after I quit doing animation for Toei (an anime company) but doing Isis made me feel like I was closer to what I’ve always wanted to do. The art of Brian Bolland on Wonder Woman and Jose Luis Garcia Lopez on Batman and Teen Titans were my favorites when I was a kid and I always dreamed to do a Wonder Woman or Batman book someday. Isis for me, felt almost like I was drawing Wonder Woman.
What other artists do you use to learn technique? :
I’m a big fan of Adam Hughes, Frank Cho, Marc Silvestri, and Travis Charest so I look to their drawings to learn what makes them work but try hard not have their styles show in my drawing so my art won’t look like copies of theirs. I incorporate the techniques I developed when I was doing key animation work and also the styles inspired by my asian favorites like Park Hui-Jin.
Where would you like to see yourself in five years with your art? :
I see myself doing more comics and also conceptual art work for movies and games.
What would your dream project be?
: Batman.
Final four questions –we ask everybody
Q) When the zombies take over the world where will you be? :
I’d be camped out in the woods living off nature and organizing a guerilla strike to blow them all off the face of the earth – that’s if I don’t get lucky enough to lock myself up with a gorgeous babe in the grocery section of a mall.
Q) Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
: Jedi.
Q) What piece of art, be it in the form of music, a book, a film or picture, do you think people must experience before they die? :
The movie “Cashback.”
Q) Give one fact that most people would not believe about you? :
I’m scared of clowns.
