What was your first project that made you feel like a real artist and how did you get it?

I have been a freelance artist for a few years but I’m still looking to break out into the comic industry.  So, I’m still looking for that one project that will make me feel like a professional artist.

What is your primary inspiration when creating art?

I’m always inspired when I’m surrounded by people who give off a lot of creative energy and by art work that is original to me.  Seeing new art work and styles always get me motivated to create some new methods of my own.

What other artists do you use to learn technique?

I always admire the technical abilities of Alex Ross and Gabriele Dell’Otto.  I like to focus a lot on lighting in my work, so when studying lighting techniques I look at Caravaggio’s body of work.  Other than my peers, artists that stand out to me are Dirk Dzimirsky, Adam Hughes, Jim Lee, David Finch, Francesco Matt Mattina and Crayton Crain.

Where would you like to see yourself in five years with your art?

I think people always want to be able to render exactly what is in their mind, no matter how long they have been doing what they doing.  So, I don’t think that I’ll ever be the best drawer or painter that I want to be, but for the sake of having a career, I can easily say that I want to be able to render things A LOT faster than I do right now.

What would your dream project be?

Good question.  I did a bunch of Batman vs. Wolverine paintings.  So if DC and MARVEL ever did a book of those two going at it, i’d love to do the covers.  Those two are my favourite to depict.  Having those two fight, to me, is more than punching or kicking. So when coming up with fight poses or composition it becomes more conceptual as opposed to he punches him or he slices him.  I like to think that these martial arts masters are beyond that.

Final four questions –we ask everybody

Q) When the zombies take over the world where will you be?

Wherever you are and eating your brains.

Q) Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?

Jedi!!

Q) What piece of art, be it in the form of music, a book, a film or picture, do you think people must experience before they die?

St. Peter’s Throne in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome….although I have yet to see it myself.

Q) Give one fact that most people would not believe about you?

Like, most people, I can crack my knuckles, but occasionally I can crack my sternum…weird.
