The cover to The Walking Dead #95

As I read through issue ninety-five of The Walking Dead, I think how original this concept is. Plus a cameo by Jesus just ramps this issue up even more.

The issue starts out with Rick and his group speaking with a man who looks like and sounds like Jesus. He leads them to a fort where his friends are situated. On the trip, violence ensues as the gang protects themselves from what appears to be guards of the fort. Jesus stops them from engaging in anymore violence. The fort has what looks to be a small village within. Jesus introduces them to it, and eventually brings them to a hotel. The hotel manager and Rick have a conversation, and eventually, Wesley shouts about Ethan being back. Ethan alerts them that David, Crystal, and Andy are apparently dead. A fight ensues while Ethan is irritated by the hotel manager, and takes his anger out in a punch to the manager’s stomach. Rick steps in the fight to stop Ethan, and he ends up killing him by mistake. Jesus looks off in dismay while Rick’s son asks if Rick is alright. He is….

This issue is quite good. Robert Kirkman obviously has a plan, and is able to easily define who these characters are by their actions. His writing is quite reminiscent of The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Otherwise, the art by Charlie Adlard is quite great. He is able to do just about anything in his style, and it shows through. Together, I cannot see any reason for any fan (or new fan) of the comic not to pick this up.
