How did you get your start in
writing?
What sucked me into writing was my passion to share visions. The first story I
wrote was in kindergarten. It was only a paragraph long and I sold it to my
grandmother for a quarter. It wasn’t until junior high that I really attempted
writing and it took three years before I learned I could write more than a page.
My senior year at Vicksburg High School, I wrote a frame story called Sweet
Dreams, but it has become a trunk book that I intend to release in the future.
Who are your biggest influences:
My biggest influences have been the masters of horror, such as Stephen King,
Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, Anne Rice, and Jack Ketchum.
3. What is your biggest inspiration when writing?
I take my inspiration from many things such as religion, politics, metaphors,
dreams, folklore, horror movies, and horror masters. I think in order to be a
creative writer, one should know no limits; anyone who is artistic can find
inspiration in practically anything. Sometimes, even walking out my front door
is enough to ignite a spark. When I write, I suppose my biggest inspiration is
my desire to reach the reader. With everything I create, I weave a moral between
the lines because I want my readers to grab something more than fear factors or
a goreapalooza.
4. Could you give us details of your current project?
Let me quote from the book’s dust jacket.
“Traumatized is fifteen dark tales, which expose the depths of human depravity
and the dank realms of the macabre.
In a collection where the comforts of church are forbidden, learn of a depraved
congregation. Journey the downward spiral that forces a morally corrupt
celebrity to revile her ugliness. Experience the lengths to which a madman will
go to keep his true love. Explore the world of maniacs, the supernatural,
creatures, eternal damnation, and the occult.
Beware . . . the shadows may camouflage a culprit. Realize . . . that bump in
the night isn’t just a tree branch tapping at your window. Learn what it really
means to be . . . Traumatized.”
5. What is the next goal you would like to achieve with
your writing?
Currently, I’m working on a novel that involves werewolves; the title is
Syrenthia Falls. With this piece, I would like to address with my readers the
issues of unprotected sex, addiction, peer pressure, but most importantly, the
fact that sometimes love isn’t enough. These subjects to me are very important
and a top priority; therefore, with this creation, my goal is to outdo myself.
6. When Zombies take over the world where will you be?
When zombies take over the world, I will be in one of two places. One, if
the zombies can run fast, I’ll probably cry and hide under the stairs. I’m not a
fast runner and mass crowds of the living dead with racing track speed would
terrify me. Two, if the zombies were slow, I would get away from them before a
dead posse could unite. Either way, I’ve seen Zombieland and completely agree
with the double tap rule.
7. Jedi, Ninja, Vampire, Werewolf, Pirate, Fairy, or
Spartan?
Werewolf is my poison of choice. I have always thought it magical to transform
and I believe these shape shifters have been underrated. I think my fascination
began when I saw the Landis classic American Werewolf in London. The werewolf
has just seemed like a force of nature that’s ranked at the top of the food
chain.
8. What is one piece of art, be it music, book, film or
picture, do you think people must experience before they die?
I believe everyone should experience The Thief of Always by Clive Barker. This
book is a spectacularly haunting fable which is intended for the majority of all
ages. This fun fantasy read makes me feel like a kid again every time I read it.
9. Give one fact that most people would not believe about
you?
The one fact most people don’t know about me is that I’m terrified to sleep
alone in a home that is pitch black and dead silent. Lying in bed listening to
that silence in the dark makes me wish something outside would make a noise;
however, hearing something stir in the dark frightens me even more as I wonder
exactly what is causing the disturbance.
