Interview questions
How did you get your start in writing?
I knew I wanted to be a writer in second grade, when I drew high praise for a
short story assignment. I studied English Lit and Creative Writing in college
(Mount Holyoke College), but I didn't actually get down to figuring out the
business of writing until I was at home raising my two children. I learned a lot
about querying and submitting my work but I didn't have a lot of time to write
with two little ones running around. Once the youngest started school, I put my
research to work, wrote my first manuscript, then a few more. I found an agent
(Elaine Koster then. I'm with Stephany Evans at FinePrint Literary now) through
a listing of new agency openings in Publisher's Weekly and she sold my "first"
(third manuscript, actually) historical romance to Dell Books in 1998, the same
year I started writing with a serious goal of publication in mind.
who are your biggest influences
Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Dean Koontz.
What is your biggest inspiration when creating?
I try to forget everything and just get caught up in the joy of writing.
Seriously. Sometimes it works. :)
Could you give us the details of your current project?
JANE SLAYRE is a paranormal retelling of JANE EYRE with Jane as a vampyre
slayer, coming in Spring 2010 from Gallery Books.
What is the next goal you would like to achieve with your
writing?
I would like to keep writing and keep selling books. Making some bestseller
lists would be fantastic, but honestly just making a living doing what I love is
a major thrill.
Final four (questions we ask all interviewees)
When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
Hunting them down and fighting them off.
Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
Fairy.
What one piece of art, be it music, book, film or picture,
do you think people must experience before they die?
Charlotte Bronte's JANE EYRE.
Give one fact that most people would not believe about
you?
I'm obsessed with Walt Disney World and wish I could live there, at the Grand
Floridian Resort, and vacation in other parts of the world.
