Interview questions
How did you get your start in music?
PW : A was a natural boy soprano at age 6, then later translated that voice to
the woodwind family ( flute, oboe, sax, recorders ) as a teen, a scholarship to
a local music college at 18, several years of classical piano training and by
age 24 playing in touring rock bands. After playing the club and bar scene in
the midwest for several years I came to LA and hooked up with Rudy Sarzo and
Tommy Aldridge in a band we called NRG in 1986 ( You Tube NRG Philip Wolfe )
they went on to Whitesnake etc .. and I went on to Impellitteri , Vinnie Vincent
, Keel , WASP etc ...
MKG: I had always been a music lover growing up. I took a year of violin lessons
and drum lessons for a few years at one point, but didn’t progress very far with
it. The drum lessons gave me a really good sense of rhythm and timing, which
proved invaluable when I took up vocals. I had been writing short stories and
poems since I was about seven or eight years old. Hence, I started out as a
lyricist originally, writing for a few projects. A number of years ago, I was
tapped to sing back-up vocals on a project that was doing covers and thought I’d
give it a try. It was fun and I was better than I thought I would be so I
decided to pursue it more intensely. I obtained a really great vocal coach who I
went to on and off for years. And I practiced almost every day, always trying to
continually raise the bar on my abilities. After singing in a couple of
different projects, cover bands mostly, Philip suggested forming an original
band and Glass Wolfe was born.
who are your biggest musical influences
PW: Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Chopin, ELP, Yes , Rainbow , Beatles
MKG: My influences have changed over the years. They started with Heart, Pat
Benatar and Saraya then shifted to the great male singers of rock: Geoff Tate,
Joe Lynn Turner, Bruce Dickinson, and Rob Halford. Now they are more along the
lines of the female sopranos coming out of Europe: Floor Jansen, Tarja Turunen,
Simone Simons, Sharon Den Adel.
What is your biggest inspiration when creating music
PW: The Cosmic Symphony of the Universe
MKG: As far a melodies, I am inspired by the music for the song. It helps me to
envision how I will sing it. Lyrically, I like a lot of history- European
especially. I also will write about things that touch many people in the course
of their lives - feeling lonely in a crowded room, feeling like no one listens,
having to let go of a relationship that is dragging you down, etc. It varies.
Could you give us the details of your current project.
PW: Our new CD .. XOTICA includes 2 mini Metal / Operas ...“Helen Of Troy” and
“Queen Of Tragedy” featuring Orchestration, Choirs and Legendary guest stars
including Chris Slade on Drums (AC/DC), Rudy Sarzo on Bass (Ozzy / Dio), Alex
Masi, Neil Citron and others on Guitar, a Duet with Paul Daniels (Rox Diamond),
photography by Stephen Manley and Art Work by the incomparable Ed Unitsky.
MKG: The material on XOTICA is definately more symphonic than our other releases
while still maintaining a metal edge to it. I get to experiment more with my
vocal range, which I like. But it also has some songs that are in the 80’s rock
genre as well as a couple of ballads. One is a duet with Paul Daniels of Rox
Diamond. So there’s a bit of variety to it. We feel it is our best offering yet.
What is the next goal you would like to achieve with your music?
PW: Touring and playing festivals with bands of similar style like Nightwish,
After Forever, Epica, Leaves Eyes, Within Temptation etc .... or any other great
headliners.
MKG: I agree with Philip. There are so many great festivals out there for the
genre of music that we play. We’d really like to be playing with bands that are
in our style of music. We are also starting to write material for the next CD.
We’d like to continue to grow with this band and bring our music to people who
will appreciate it, like it and get behind it.
final four
When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
PW: In the studio, writing, recording Maria’s vocals, playing the keyboards and
producing the next CD.
MKG: In the studio as well (with the doors locked!) writing, recording and
singing. With a lot of books on hand - I love to read as well.
Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
PW: Samurai
MKG: Probably a fairy. They are so feminine and beautiful and range from the
angelic to the gothic. The other choices are a bit manly for me. And don’t
believe Philip on this question. Practically every movie or book he has revolves
around Ninja’s. He even named his dog Ninja!
What one piece of art, be it music, book, film or picture,
do you think people must experience before they die?
PW: movie : The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is one of the best ever films with
great action, adventure and music score.
MKG: That’s a hard one to answer. “Gone with the Wind” was not only an amazing
movie that still holds up after over 50 years, but was based on a really great
book.
Give one fact that most people would not believe about you?
PW: I was an avid hiker-camper and adventurer in my younger days.
I have done solo hikes in the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Mt. Rainier, Olympic Rain
Forest, Yellowstone, Prairie Creek Redwoods, Sedona, Catalina Island and the
Sonoran deserts and mountains of Tucson.
I have had close encounters with rattlesnakes, wild boars, mountain lions,
bears, a hawk, scorpions, a herd of elk and almost froze in a blizzard.
MKG: I once worked for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office as a
Legal Office Support Assistant. I prepared all the legal documents for the
Deputy District Attorneys in the division I worked in for their court hearings.
There were at least ten Deputy DA's in my Division. This included subpoenas,
motions, points and authorities, notice to produce, notice of continuance,
workers’ compensation liens, bankruptcy proofs of claim and much more.
