Interview questions
How did you get your start in writing?
I started writing at the age of 14, and sold my first work at the age of
about 28. I wasn't sending out to any publishers, and one of my best friends
bought me a ticket to a convention and actually drove me there to encourage me
to try to learn more about being a professional. Amazingly, I met the editor who
bought my first book there, and I was on my way to being published in a matter
of weeks.
who are your biggest influences -
I'd have to say Roger Zelazny is probably one of my idols, as well as
romantic adventure writers like Baroness Orczy.
What is your biggest inspiration when creating? -
I've always had lots of stories buzzing around in my head ... I never seem to
run out of things to write about. I think most of all it's the delight of just
telling a story that interests me -- which I hope will appeal to other people.
Could you give us the details of your current project?
-
I just finish Total Eclipse, which will be out in August 2010, and I'm
really excited about it. It's the last book in the 9-volume Weather Warden
series, and I tried to really put it all together. Looking forward to seeing
what people think about it!
Also, I'm starting work on Ghost Town, the 9th book in the Morganville series
... I think this is going to be a very interesting book to write because I plan
to do something really different and (hopefully) very dramatic. This is also
going to be the first Morganville book to be hardcover.
I probably should also say that Unknown, the second book of the Outcast Season
series, is coming out right now, and I'm so thrilled with the response I've been
getting about Cassiel as a main character. It was a risk to start a new series
with a Djinn (genie) but I really think she's got a style all her own.
What is the next goal you would like to achieve with your
writing?
- Honestly, I can't even imagine, I feel very fortunate to be where I am. I
would like to see one of the series made into a film or tv show, as addicted as
I am to those art forms, though!
Final four (questions we ask all interviewees)
When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
- Holed up in a bunker with my friends, with chainsaws and Twinkies.
Hopefully.
Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
-
Oh, definitely pirate. Yarrrrr.
What one piece of art, be it music, book, film or picture,
do you think people must experience before they die? -
I honestly can't imagine not ever having seen Close Encounters of the Third
Kind. That's probably my island movie. Then again, I can't imagine life without
a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, either ...
Give one fact that most people would not believe about
you? -
I have an accounting degree and worked as an claims investigator. Never
fear - I was HORRIBLE at it.
