Sonya Kahn

When you take one part Pat Benatar and part Alicia Keys and mix in a lot of
originality you get Sonya Kahn a talented performer coming from a history of
classical performances that is going to make her mark on the world of popular
music. She took some time off from writing her own music and performing to share
some time with us.
Q) I was reading that you started in music at a very early age and you were
actually touring with a music group at six. How did that come about?
I started to sing professionally at a very young age, I went through the process
of auditioning like every other kid and was chosen to be the lead singer of a
pop group. We constantly toured, released albums and I loved every minute of it.
Q) Your songs run the gambit from soulful melodies to rocking beats. Which
comes more naturally and is it tough playing a show and switching gears between
the two?
I love variety, trying different outlets to express myself and create art. I
have played piano since I was 3 years old, it’s my main instrument but I was in
love with guitar ever since my uncle - Jimmy Hendrix die-hard fan, played his
tunes for me.
Switching between the two is not challenging at all, they both come naturally…
it all depends on what instrument I used to write the song and I just go with
the flow.
Q) Both your mother and grandmother were involved in performing music. Did
either of them give you any advice that has stood you in good stead over the
years?
My grandmother had an amazing voice and my mother is an exceptionally talented
concert pianist/professor… I remember them constantly practicing, working on
their God-given talents.
My mother’s advice that I will never forget was that there are no short cuts and
miracles in high art. I have to work as hard as I can in order to become the
best musician that I can be. Talent alone is nothing if you don’t nurture it.
That meant practicing at least 5 hours everyday and making big sacrifices
throughout my childhood, now, and of course in the future.
Q) Who are your biggest influences and where do you draw inspiration from when
crafting songs?
There are so many wonderful and inspirational musicians, composers both
classical and contemporary that I look up to,
learn from… just to name a few songwriters like Jule Styne, Billy Joel, Elton
John, Sting… I am determined to write the kind of songs, the kind of music that
stands the test of time.
Q) Are there any other performers you would like to perform or create music
with?
That list is endless – Rolling Stones, Quincy Jones, Andrea Bocelli, Jill Scott,
John Mayer, Metallica, Mos Def….
Q) What is the next big goal you would like to achieve with your music/ career?
My next big goal for my career is to be able to share my music with a broader
audience on many levels – through radio, TV, excessive touring, etc…
Q) If people want to buy your music or get more info about you where can they
go?
My debut album ‘New Beginning’ is available on iTunes and many other websites.
You can find more music, videos, information, pictures on my official site

Final four (questions we ask all interviewees)
Q) When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
I will be in my privet spaceship heading to Mars to our underground City Of
Hope.
Q) Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
Spartan or vampire, can’t decide between these two.
Q) What one piece of art, be it music, a book, a film or picture, do you
think people must experience before they die?
Listen to music and read books.
Q) Give one fact that most people would not believe about you?
I think that would be the fact that I hold a Ph.D. in music at such a young age
and in addition being an accomplished concert pianist that writes and produces
pop/rock music.
